Chapter 33

ELIZA

By the time I reached the car park, Amy was already waiting for me.

“Finally,” she said as I got in the car. “Where have you been? Tasha already got bored and left.”

I waved my hand. “Just around and about.”

“You look awfully pleased with yourself for someone who didn't even want to come yesterday.”

“Well sometimes I can be wrong about things... and people.”

“Things and people? What are you going on about... Eliza?" She took her eyes off the road to dart a suspicious glance my way. “Why is your top on inside out?”

I looked down, and she was right. How had I missed that? Busted!

“I was with Jack,” I said sheepishly. I hadn't intended to tell her, but there was a possibility I might explode if I didn't say something.

“With with?”

“Uh-huh.”

She nearly swerved the car off the road. “What? Where?”

“In one of the English classrooms.”

“Eliza!” Her eyes nearly popped out of her head. “You couldn't wait until you got home?”

“I didn't want to give him time to change his mind.”

She pulled her schoolteacher face. “You are worth more than that. How many times do I have to tell you?”

I stared out of the window. “That sounded worse than it was.”

“So are you back together?”

“Not exactly...”

“Oh no, Eliza!”

“It's a work in progress."

Amy sighed. “Look, I know when you really love someone it can make you go a bit loopy and do things you wouldn't normally; believe me.” Her cheeks flushed. “Actually, this is you, so it's not even as insane as it would be for someone else.” She grinned as I gave her a smack on the arm. “But it's no secret you've been devastated over your breakup with Jack, and I don't think you're in a place right now where you can make good choices where he's concerned.”

I remembered the emotions I'd felt from him when I looked into Jack's eyes. “Don't stress, Amy. I can handle it. Thanks for the pep talk though.”

She shot me a dubious glance before giving me a sly smile. “So how was it?”

I sank back in my seat. “Out of this world,” I said with a grin.

“My oh my,” Amy said as she pulled up at the end of my driveway. “I take it all back. Maybe you do know what you're doing after all.”

I followed her gaze to see what she was talking about. Looking up at my house, I swallowed down a grin of satisfaction. Jack was leaning against my front door.

Well, well, well.

I said goodbye to Amy and walked up the drive.

“Okay,” he said when I reached him.

“Okay what?”

“Okay, I'll tell you what's been going on. But you're not going to like it.”

“I'm sure I won't.”

Once I'd made sure the coast was clear, Mum and Stan were passed out in front of the TV, and Daisy was in bed, I ushered Jack upstairs and into my bedroom.

“So let's hear it,” I said after closing the door.

“First, I need to warn you that after you left I overheard Mayor Green talking about a dodgy plan, and I think I saw your new boyfriend there too.
